Jesus Beats

"Joy"
by For King & Country
The message is loud and clear! I CHOOSE JOY!

Jesus Beats

"Not Today Satan"
by KB featuring Andy Mineo
KB is my favorite rapper because you can hear the smile in his voice!

Jesus Beats

"Breakup Song"
by Francesca Battistelli
I sang this so loud just now it scared the cat. If you want to tell fear where to go, you can sing it loud with me!

Jesus Beats

"Burn the Ships"
by For King & Country
This contains a powerful illustration about leaving the past behind and burning the ships so you can’t return to it. What do you need to leave behind? Let’s go!

Jesus Beats

"The Saints"
by Andy Mineo featuring KB & Trip Lee
Just listen to how much fun these guys are having! These are three of my very favorite rappers.

Jesus Beats

"Hold Me Back"
by KB
This is my theme song for the year!

Jesus Beats

"Fix My Eyes"
by For King & Country
It’s upbeat and has such a positive message!

Jesus Beats

"Church Clap"
by KB featuring Lecrae
I can’t listen to this without my heart being transported back to Nicaragua, dancing in the rain with kids and living my best life, serving with some amazing locals. Such a feeling!

Jesus Beats

"God Flex"
by Tedashii featuring Trip Lee
I smile just hearing these guys’ names. They have not had it easy but they bring the hope of God into everything they do. I once had the great privilege of praying with Tedashii about a year after he lost his son, I’ll never forget it. I have prayed strength for Trip Lee for years as he copes with chronic fatigue syndrome. Through it all, they persist!

Jesus Beats

"Happy Dance"
by MercyMe
This song needs no explanation!

Jesus Beats

"Shake"
by MercyMe
If you ever get the chance to see this band in concert, DO IT!

Jesus Beats

"Move"
by Flame
Flame opened my mind to the wonder of Christian Rap. I had no idea this genre existed. I saw him three times in the first year.

Jesus Beats

"Even If"
by MercyMe
It’s not an upbeat song, but an intentional reminder of the source of my lasting hope and joy. Circumstances could never change the fact that God has made it well with my soul.

Joy Jams

"2 Legit 2 Quit"
by MC Hammer
The very first concert I ever went to was with my sister to see MC Hammer. The excitement of being overtaken by live music began a lifelong love of concerts, something that fills my bucket beyond overflowing. She kept telling me to sit down but I had to dance, and still do! The music starts at 8:32 in this mini movie that’s full of cameos.

Joy Jams

"Separate Ways"
by Journey
Why does the video for one of the most epic rock songs of all time have to be so cheesy? I just laughed so hard. I am pretty sure Steve Perry and I had the same shirt (but NOT pants!). My son is teaching me to play the drums and someday I want to play THIS SONG!

Joy Jams

"Uptown Funk"
by Mark Ronson / Bruno Mars
This gets me going every single time! It reminds me the day my son and I test drove a Mustang in an empty icy parking lot, whipping it until the magnetic license plate flew off, (that was fun to find out back at the dealership) and then pulled over in an empty school lot to get out of the car and dance to this song. I hesitated to post a song with any profanity, but nothing beats the original, so don’t judge me!

Joy Jams

"U Smile"
by Justin Bieber
This will forever make my heart smile because it captures the joy of making other people’s dreams come true… in this case, my daughter’s dream of seeing JB in concert. We custom made t-shirts and spent a whole day in line just so we could see him coming out of his tour bus before the show. We could only afford nosebleed seats but felt so connected to the music. Such memories!

Joy Jams

Drops of Jupiter"
by Train
Can you watch this without singing along? The offbeat is almost too much for me to handle. And yes, YES: Dance along the light of day!

Joy Jams

"What About Love"
by Austin Mahone
Somehow this song became my favorite biking song years ago. Now I literally cannot ride to it without letting go of the handlebars and dance biking. I don’t know if dance biking is a thing anywhere else but it’s a thing on MY bike. I groove my way down the road (as long as there is a really wide shoulder), moving to the music and drawing glances and honks from people in cars. Anyone in my community who reads this is going to have a lightbulb moment if they have ever passed me during this song.

Joy Jams

"Secrets"
by OneRepublic
An offbeat song with violins?! It’s probably the song that finally blew the speakers in my car. The second it starts, all I can do is exhale and get lost in its awesomeness.

Joy Jams

"Bohemian Rhapsody"
by Queen
No list of my favorite songs would be complete without this legendary masterpiece!

Joy Jams

"Canon in D"
by Pachelbel
When the violins do their thing around the 2 minute mark, I don’t know what was in the video, I couldn’t see through the tears.

Joy Jams

"No Surprise"
by Daughtry
The intense, raw emotion in Chris Daughtry’s voice leaves me responding with unintelligible grunts. I can barely form comprehensible words. The teen girls who rode to Pennsylvania in my car on a mission trip would agree, they had to put up with this song the whole way there!

Joy Jams

"Whatever it Takes"
by Imagine Dragons
Such a great biking song! ‘Cause I love the adrenaline in my veins.

Joy Jams

"I Lived"
by OneRepublic
Once while I was nearing home at the end of a roadtrip with a special friend, we turned opposite of the road to home so we could crank this on full blast with our windows down. Such a perfect message!

Joy Jams

"Some Nights"
by Fun
The tribal drums and memories singing this at the top of my lungs with my daughter make this an automatic YES!

Joy Jams

"Copacabana"
by Barry Manilow
I am pretty sure this song sums up my growing up years! This might not make your list, but it has to be included on mine.

Joy Jams

"It Takes Two"
by Rob Base & DJ EZ Rock
The freedom of college in a song! My roommate and I knew every word. I was Rob Base and she was Dee Dee Easy Rock. When this song comes on today, I am 18 and doing life my way!

Joy Jams

"Let’s Get It Started"
by The Black Eyed Peas
For a short time I got to teach kickboxing to kids and this song was always a crowd favorite. So much fun!

Joy Jams

"Diamond Heart"
by Alan Walker
One day my son and I randomly took off on a roadtrip for deep dish pizza. We drove 4 hours there, 4 hours back and listened to Alan Walker’s Different World CD the whole way. It was such a special adventure, full of connection and joy! And the pizza was good too.

Joy Jams

"Zombies Ate My Neighbors"
by Schoolboy
This song makes me bike up and down hills like a maniac. The fun factor is off the charts! When I have a huge hill coming up, I start this song to power through it.

Must-Haves

Best mission organization I have ever worked with! We have served with this group twice (once digging trenches to run water pipe into the homes of remote villagers and another time, helping build two elementary schools) and cannot wait to go back. They are organized, purposeful, empowering of all they serve, and Christ-centered. For anyone who has wanted to serve on a mission trip and doesn’t how to make it happen, try this group.

Must-Haves

Awesome well-run skydiving business who helped us surprise our son with a family jump on his 18th birthday: Skydive Windy City Chicago. We got to see Lake Michigan and the Chicago skyline from the air! It is such an incredible experience. I clapped all the way down!

Must-Haves

Our family’s favorite annual Christian concert tour: Winter Jam. I have taken at least one of the kids almost every year since they were in elementary school. It’s worth going to because there are a ton of great bands for under $20 and there are positive people everywhere. Even if we didn’t know every artist or every song, we learned many new favorites. The music is uplifting and always points our hearts in the right direction.

Must-Haves

Same Kind of Different As Me
The book I will never forget. Every human being should read this true story of perceived differences and how seeking to understand other people’s perspectives can lead to unity and relationship. It will inspire you to break down the barriers and connect! The movie is well done but the book goes into a much deeper understanding.

Must-Haves

Life Application Study Bible: For anyone wanting to understand and apply God’s word, I love this version. Reading the notes helps me grasp things that previously made little or no sense to me. It’s like having a pastor there to discuss the readings with. We call it the Bible for Dummies and every member of our family owns a copy. We have bought several of these as gifts.

Must-Haves

Noxgear Tracer360 Visibility Vest: This lights up and makes me visible when night biking, which I believe keeps me safer. And all of the colors and light patterns are just FUN! I have had so many people stop me and ask where I got this because it can be seen from so far away.

Must-Haves

TaoTronics Bluetooth Headphones: Music fuels my need to move and these earbuds are inexpensive and fabulous. They block other sounds and get you in the zone quickly.

Must-Haves

Weight & Glory CD by KB: I cannot tell you how many times I have listened to these songs while biking. I have so many memories to these lyrics. The CD is older but it’s the one that really helped me learn who KB is as an artist. Since buying this CD, I have gone to several KB concerts and have bought all of his CDs and singles. He is honest, refreshing, and keeps his focus on Jesus. While I am probably not the target demographic that Christian rappers are aiming at, I have loved this type of music for years and have told a ton of people about the genre and taken them to concerts. Maybe the demographic never mattered in the first place.

Must-Haves

Amazon Echo: It is so much fun to ask Alexa to play any kind of music and change your mind at the drop of a hat and ask for something entirely new by name or genre or artist. To be honest, telling Alexa what to play makes me feel powerful! Alexa can play games and provide all kinds of information and even responds “no problem” when I say “thank you.” Music is important in our house so we use ours constantly.

Must-Haves

Mini Vaseline: I love mini things and these are adorable and so helpful if you spend time outside. I have several of these stashed in various places!

Must-Haves

Virginia bluebells: These remind me of my dad and they are a beautiful PURPLE blue (periwinkle) color! They come back every year. They are so intensely colorful!

Must-Haves

Daffodils: They are upbeat and sunny and come back year after year. Because they were my Grandma’s favorite flower, seeing daffodils in the spring brings me a rich kind of joy.

Must-Haves

Barry Manilow Greatest Hits CD: Being raised on a teacher’s salary didn’t afford a lot of extras, but my mom did what she could to give us a great life. Barry Manilow’s songs were a big part of our family soundtrack. When we were young adults, my sister and I surprised our mom with a Barry Manilow concert. It was a beautiful way to show her the simple joys she gave us were appreciated and remembered!

Must-Haves

Fake Swears Filthy Expletives That Are 102% Clean: This conversation-starting book has been on our family table for years. It’s hilarious! We’ve had people ask to borrow it!

Must-Haves

Book of Awesome: This book was given to me by a very special friend. It is filled with uplifting, short & sweet stories of simple joys that make great bathroom reading.

Must-Haves

Puffs Plus With Lotion: See the “Really Good Kleenex” part of “Robin’s Sources of Joy” and don’t worry about tears or the fact that I am using trademarked names incorrectly!

Must-Haves

Sound of Music DVD: It’s cheesy, predictable, quotable, and a big part of our family tradition to watch this and sing along once a year (after hours of convincing the guys to participate). It’s my favorite movie and I am happy to say I have seen it over 30 times!

I ask that you read this enormously important disclaimer: I do not believe we need THINGS to live a fulfilled life. Some of the most joy-filled, grateful people I am blessed to know live in Nicaragua, which has been named the 2nd poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. But for anyone who wanted to know where to find the things and organizations I talk about, I will link some of them here, as well as other meaningful services and items that have made a difference in my life and save you a step. Do with this information what you will!

Who is Robin Shear?

If it’s important for you to know who I am so you can determine if we are a fit, this page is in-depth, just for you!

If you don’t make it to the end, here’s the main thing you need to know about me, the take-home message:

I want to know and connect with people and help them incorporate ridiculous amounts of joy into their lives.

Let’s be honest, if you are reading this, I want to know and connect with YOU. I don’t know anything about you. I want to know your stories, what brings you joy, what matters to you deep down, what you would like to overcome, what you dream of experiencing, how you want to grow and change and live your best life… all of it.

Is this possible, with me being here and you being there? Yes! Because of the magical internet and free videoconferencing software!

Everyone Has a Backstory

Please don’t laugh, because it’s true: I have lived in the same sleepy midwestern town village with one blinking light and very little variety for most of my life. But doing life here has allowed me to know and connect with an entire community, something I will forever be grateful for. On the flip side, living in the same map-dot has also fueled a burning need to know people who are different. I am drawn to people of different races, abilities, upbringings, faith backgrounds, age groups, nationalities, hang-ups and struggles, names & addresses, you name it, just people who are different than me. I love to identify common ground, create unity and establish relationship… and feel less different. There is beauty in connection. Once while on a subway in Manhattan, I saw a man with a tattoo that read “Dear God, please save me from my friends.” He had his hood up and his headphones on, so as badly as I wanted to connect, I respected his boundaries… but the image haunts me and I will forever want to know his story. He was different and I was curious.

To read an incredibly inspiring book about cultivating unity and relationship,

Because I have been told that connecting with people is my superpower, I feel that doing this in a variety of ways has prepared me to be your coach. I have been a wife to a husband who could be teaching people how to be a great husband and father for over 25 years. We have two beautiful children who amaze me constantly and are now young adults chasing their own joys in life, looking to contribute to the well-being of others. We have never had mountains of money, but we are loaded in all the ways that matter. We make incredibly fun and meaningful memories together, talk about everything openly, and have a phenomenal family life. While we have shared too many special moments and crazy memories to list here, stay tuned, as I hope to publish a book full of ideas before God calls me home. I fully accept the fact that our family life can never be perfect, but it’s even better than the life I wanted and imagined having someday. I am so thankful!

My first professional (in other words: paid!) calling was in the field of dietetics, which I adored and never planned to leave. I got to teach nutrition at the college level, lead worksite wellness classes around the community, and do a bunch of public speaking.

I am one of those weird people who lights up in front of an audience… I actually love the feeling of sharing with a crowd! I’ll speak to any group that would benefit from a joy boost!
Book a Free Breakthrough Session to discuss your event!

I also ran a nutrition counseling practice where I specialized in eating disorder recovery. Here I met wonderful but deeply burdened people who slowly came to life before my eyes (with a lot of help from good therapists). One of my formerly anorexic clients has said that the day we went to a Halloween store and dressed up like an outhouse and the Incredible Hulk was a turning point in her recovery. Who knew that joyful experiences could inspire actual living?

After 8 years of volunteering as a church youth group leader, it became clear the time had come to leave the field of dietetics and focus solely on youth ministry as a profession. I jumped in with both feet and had a complete blast connecting with kids of all ages and their families, aiming to help them see how God’s word is alive and relevant in their everyday lives. We talked about everything in relation to scripture, went to tons of concerts and youth gatherings to help them feel connected with other believers their age, got involved in countless service projects and mission trips, and had a riot doing it all. I can’t say what impact this had on the kids or families, but it led to incredible growth and fulfillment in my own heart!

For a brief, sweet period, I got to serve senior citizens in the area of life enrichment. I cherished being adopted by the elderly residents of 4 distinct communities and learning about their lives and values while creating moments of meaning. I can hardly believe I got paid for that. We went on mystery trips, grew our weekly exercise classes to standing room only (those folks can throw down seated kickboxing moves and a YMCA dance routine with the best of them!), and constantly shared who we are and what matters to us. My life is so much richer because of these priceless friends.

Coaching Enters the Story

But while I was working with seniors, a warm spot began to grow in my heart, an idea that was taking root and making me wonder if my next calling was materializing. As I realized I could meet my need to know and connect with people as a life coach and public speaker, I began to share the idea with my family and inner circle. After receiving a unified response of “GO FOR IT,” I eventually shared my vision more broadly on social media. I guess I thought people from my community would say “What’s life coaching?” and “Get a real job!” But the voices of people I had known all my life said “YES!” “I can see you doing this!” and “This is YOU!” Honestly, I was taken aback by it. Starting a business would mean taking a big leap of faith and I wanted to park my heart there a while and make sure this was really something I could do. I took a breath. The thing that held me back was, I just didn’t know what I would coach people on, exactly. What do I know about? What can I offer other people?

When I was ready to stop listening to doubt and fear and revisit the same warmth in my heart, which was God’s voice within my belief system, I saw the common denominator in all of the above ways I have been called to serve and live my own life, all of those years and experiences coming together into one very clear focus, the subject I felt I actually could coach people on: JOY. You know…

At that moment, it occurred to me I didn't need to be an expert on an academic topic to be a helpful coach who can impact people’s lives for the better. I could specialize in the thing that permeated how I was already living: JOY! Joy is the ribbon that weaves my whole picture together and I want to extend that same beautiful ribbon to you, right here, right now.

After receiving some extremely thorough Whole-Person Coach training through Coach Training World, I joined the International Coach Federation, took the leap of faith, did the hokey pokey, and put my whole self in… because I want to meet you and help you discover your joy.

What About Your Story?

What I love about this is we can meet online wherever you are. Any state, any country, any time zone. There are no limits. You can be in Palestine, Turkey, India, Northern Ireland, Nicaragua, or Toledo (I am blessed to have made connections with wonderful people in these places already! The whole “Joy To The World Coaching” thing is intentional!). You can sit somewhere comfortable in your sweats, download Zoom (the free software that lets us chat), and pull me up on your screen, and together we will figure out what matters to you and how to get you there. It’s so easy. And just between us, I genuinely hope that the guy with the tattoo shows up on my screen someday so I can know him and help him understand he’s not alone. I have been praying for him for years.

*You might think this all sounds really nice - a girl in a village who wants to spread joy, how sweet. I could leave it there and let you think that. But the truth is, I want something bigger. I want to infect the world with joy as part of my plan for world domination. It’s the biggest takeover ever. Can you imagine a globe that overflows with joy?!

If you could imagine that, let’s talk: We’re not that different!

Robin's Sources of Joy

My Christian Faith

Being in a living relationship with God is central to the core of my existence. I could not tell my story without including my faith, because God is the ultimate source of my lasting joy. I will gladly share my faith with all who ask, but I will never push it on those who don’t. If you would like to share how your beliefs guide and shape you, however different they may be from mine, you will find a very interested and humbled listener… please don’t be afraid to share, I love to learn! If praying together in our coaching sessions would be meaningful to you, I would be honored. Praying with people is one of my greatest joys.

Shared Experiences & Adventures

These really drive my choices and bring me a tremendous amount of joy. Whether it’s a hooky day with one of my kids (I love spending time in antique stores and dreaming of buying a one-room schoolhouse with my daughter or test-driving muscle cars and attending concerts with my son); a relaxing day at the beach, dinner on the patio or a picnic on top of our frozen lake in the winter with my husband; wholeheartedly acting out every part of Bohemian Rhapsody with everyone in the car on a great roadtrip; cheering for friends at the Special Olympics (this is a population who could be coaching the world on joy!); hearing responses to my “Ask me how we are alike” shirt; learning who people really are as we share dinner at a local soup kitchen; when a person with memory loss has a beautiful moment of clarity… I am all about the deep connection that comes when experiences are shared!

Movement

Being still for long periods is torture for me. I crave motion. I walked our beloved Brittany Spaniel over 7,000 miles in her lifetime because her trot was so cute and irresistible. I literally have to break into dancing, jump around, and unite with music completely at concerts (don’t stand next to me!). Weightlifting feels great because I can be strong and capable; I can be small but mighty. I would love to join a roller derby team, but I can’t convince my family to support the idea just yet. Distance biking is my very favorite “get to”– I love getting to ride fast down hills, aim at mud puddles on dirt roads, tackle the challenge of bad weather biking just to say “IN YOUR FACE” to conditions that could keep me from riding, turn wherever I want and as many times as I want, and pray for the people in my life and listen to Christian rap music the whole time.

Among many gifted artists,
KB is my favorite rapper because you can hear the smile in his voice!

Nighttime bike rides are the best because I have so many colorful lights, it looks like the circus is coming to town. Moving makes my heart sing! I need to get up and move as soon as I finish this sentence.

More joys:
